Hm... It has been some time since we last blog an entry. Session has resumed for a few sessions during this holiday. A handful of the boys gained freedom again and I really wish them all the best to a new start.

We had a great session last week. Played this blind-fold obstacle game. Goodness... it was so fun! Laughter filled the whole room. Haha... We should play that again.

Hello!!!

Haha, so on April Fool's day we had our last session for the semester before we stand down temporarily to study for exams.

Through chit-chatting with the boys, we realised that some of the boys would be discharging soon! Definitely a piece of good news for them, as they would be able to gain back the freedom and can start work to earn income after their release. So probably by the time we resume back our session, we will be able to see new faces to join our NTU volunteer games session! LoL....

With that, I hope everyone who's reading this will work hard for your exams! Jia you!
頑張ってください!

Cheers,
Wei Yang

Exam is nearing, hopefully everyone is starting to prepare for their papers.

Well.. this week's session was the 2nd last for the semester before we break for exams. We had quite a simple and fun session.

We played a game call ___?? No name. haha! Hm.. let me give it a name, SHAPES. Basically, a member from the group will be given a name of an item. Say Peter is given the word "Refrigerator", he has to ask John, his group member, to draw a rectangle. The next group member, Mary, will be asked to draw a straight line across the rectangle. The members take turn to draw until they guessed the item that they are drawing correctly. Imagine describing Char Kway Tiao in shapes to your members... HAHA. List things from items, places, food, movies etc. It is so fun. Makes our brains think and be more creative!

website for games

Hey people!

I've found a website that lists down alot of games that we could use or modify for our sessions:

Basically, there are group games, ice breakers and team building games.

So, if any of u have run out of games or wana have more interactive/intellectual/not so boring/ more meaningful games, u all could visit this website to find out more! =D

Cheers

e belated post part 2!!!

HELLO! me again! hahaha, in continuation of my previous post but i cover the next session which happened 2 weeks ago...ehhh is it 2 weeks? maybe 3...ok nvm, nt impt. impt is the GAMES! yayyy

okeeeeeeeee...first game we played that day was the memory game! We put many little items into this tissue box that eunice brought! We are once again split into 2 teams and every time a few people come up front to us and have to memorise what items are there in the box! They are given like hmmmm 30seconds i think? So afterwards, we'll remove few items from the box and fastest team that spots the missing item GAINS POINTS! woohoooooo! yupppp... we played that for a few rounds and increased e difficulty by taking out more items~!

next gameeeeeeeee! what did we play? errrr....OH! NINJA WARRIORS! haha...in my church, my cell group loves to play this game...i dun really understand why...i guess maybe it's exciting to them so we decided to play it in the session too! hahaha...this game goes like this...we stand in a circle and shout NINJA WARRIORS! then the game begins! person by person will take only 1 step to try and hit another person's hand...of course you can try avoid.if you got hit at the hand, YOU ARE OUT OF THE GAME! hahaha...um, it wasnt really successful at the start I think due to the huge circle we had and my poor explanation of the game. However, I think it slowly got better and we can observe few people who are good at the game or some that have innate helping aids like long hands. hahahah! yesh! anyway, we played a few rounds and TADA next game!

the final game was the CHAIR GAME again!last time yuling kindly helped update our blog with description of this game so if you want to know how to play...CHECK OUT OUR FIRST POST!:D okeee...but this time i think the game was still exciting but it got really tiring towards the end because we're left with the same few people trying to cross over. haha! still, hope that game helped everyone GET HIGH n ummm workout a little! hahaha!

YIPEE! end of my update! SEE YOU ALL ON THURS! clapssssssssssssssssss

<3 eileen w everyone from group 2!~!!

the belated updateeee!

Hello! I'm soooooooo sorry I forgot!!!

However! Here's the update on the games group 2 planned last time!!! I shall cover both sessions in 1 post!

FIRST-UP!

this session was the one rather long ago! The games were planned by weeloon!!! Let me try recall what we played!

We played this game called Reaction Game in the session! This game requires volunteers and boys to be split into 2 teams and they'll come up with things that they want people from the following team to do/act and let the reamining members from the other team to guess!!! The trick is to make it HARD for other teams to guess...

hahaha! so in the end we had weird things like 'Do stupid things' and Kian Seng really ran around the room and PIAK himself on the wall and just acted stupid. hahaha! BUT it's really good sportsmanship from him! Besides that, there were still other things like tennis ball or smtg...

YUP! so the games were pretty fun!!!

Next up, there's FOLLOW THE LEADER! haha i think many of us played this before so I don't really think need to explain much...it's basically we choose 1 person go out and the remaining people in the room appoint the leader and follow his actions. The person that went out previously will return and guess who's the leader!!! yup! hahaha!

Personally although being one of the game masters I didnt participate in the game but i think the game was really fun! haha at least everyone was doing actions and their different versions of the same action can be quite funny! Besides that, at the start, the boys will have INNOVATIVE ways to hint to each other who's the leader is...tsk tsk tsk! hahaha! but CAUGHT THEM IN THE ACT so hahaha they have to beware not hinting so obviously or just making them the leader solves the problem! It was pretty fun I think! We played till the session's overrr!

YUP! so here's the first update of the further away games that group 2 planned and carried out!!!

<3 eileen!

We had a great session again last week... coz it's LUNAR NEW YEAR!

~~YAY~~ ^.^

We had memory game using ang baos. Prepare 8 pairs of ang baos, Basically, hide all the ang baos behind individual papers labelled with numbers. Then flip over the papers and give the participants 1 minute to memorise the position of the ang baos. Cover the ang baos. Mix and match the similar ang baos!

All the volunteers brought ang baos and we had a lantern making competition!

One turned out to be some U.F.O spaceship, the other turned out like a chicken (meant to be a fish)!!!!! HAHAAHA... we had such great fun.

Hello everyone!

It's team 4's turn to plan for the games this week! We decided to go back to the basics and started off with WINK MURDER!

The game goes like this:

Everyone sits in a circle, and a leader goes and picks two people while everyone is closing their eyes. The people that are picked are the winkers, but only the leader knows that.

When the leader announces, everyone can open their eyes and look around at other people. The winker's objectives are to 'kill' everyone in the room. They do this by making eye contact with someone and winking at them.

If you are winked at, you have to wait five seconds, then "die", dramatically or not. Everyone else has to look around and try and identify the "killers". When both killers are identified, the game is over.

The funniest part of the game was when one of the boys couldn't be 'killed' because he's not wearing specs and can't see clearly! HAHA.

The next game we played is called the Reaction game and it goes like this:

Everyone will be separated into 2 grps and each grp got to write down a 'scene' for each members of the opposing grp. After which, the game master will get each person to act out their 'assigned' scenario! This game encourages the creativity of the boys and they came up with scenes like 'acting as a camel and drink water', 'crying after dumped by ur girlfren' and 'acting cute and intro urself' etc. At the end of the session, everyone enjoyed themselves and will be looking forward to the next session!

Alright, that's all for today and it's really nice to see our Blk B volunteers growing from strength to strength! See you all next week!

I think we had yet another great session this week!

It was exciting to see new boys coming for our session. As some of them are being transfered for good reasons, we have new boys joining in the fun.

Since we have new faces, we played a Postman game. The Postman game goes this:

Everyone stands in a circle while the postman stands in the middle.
The postman will say "I want to post the letter from __(someone)__ house to ___(someone)__.

When these 2 names are being called, the 2 person must run to each other's position. The postman will try to snatch either of their position as fast as possible.

The one who loses the position will be the next postman!

(This simple game is good for ice breaking and let us remember each other's name in a fun way.)

Then we had another game, the STRAW & FINGER game:
Connect about 12 straws (depending on the number of players) for a group of 6 people.

Each player can only have 1 finger on the long connected straws at any point in time. The whole group will have to stand up together, lifting the straws carefully without dropping.

There is a trick to this game. THINK!

Clue lies in: The rule says 'Each player can only have 1 finger on the long connected straws at any point in time.'

I had a great fun during this session... great laughs... stupid and silly things happened. I think they will be happy to come for more and more sessions!

New boys for sessions!

Hey!

This is my first entry for our BLK B BLOG!

Today's my first session for year 2010, and today's session is quite different.

Firstly, by right it's one boy's last session today.. ok.. but it turned out he'd still be here for next week's session, and that's really the last. ohh! and another one whose last session was on last week, turned up today as well and his last session is next week too! Yup, so ATTENTION EVERYONE! do make it for next week's session and bid farewell and give our well wishes to them as they move on ya =)

Secondly, there're 5 new boys today and during the postman game, we would always confuse 2 of them and they ended up getting confused as well.

Thirdly, there's chihui's homemade cookies and fried popiah skin which were super nice and the boys really enjoyed them! Everyone was comfortable with one another, including those new boys, as they shared and offered the food, chatting with one another. The feeling was like family.. =D

* * * * *

Time really flies! Together with Yuling and Chihui, this year marks our third year with RSP Youth. I still remembered, before we signed up for CCA in Year 1, we could have a "trial" session with some of the RSPs. I went for FOC (Friends Of Children) session at one of the centres and I saw Yuling there as well. After I've cleared the interviews for both FOC and Youth, I was deliberating on which RSP to join as both have a total clash of sessions. But eventually, I chose Youth.

After making our choice, there's the Youth orientation. That was also when I saw Yuling and it's like, "wow! I see familiar face!" and that marked the beginning of our Youth journey =)

During the sessions in year 1, the boys would only interact with the seniors most of the time. Even with initiatives, it was quite difficult for the new volunteers to have sustained interaction with the boys. So i was thinking, "Is it that our approach is wrong or inappropriate that the boys would not feel like interacting with us?" So it was somehow abit discouraging that even though it has already been a few months, I still cant seem to get close to them, much more saying about helping them, knowing more about them and making friends with them. But I still went for the sessions and that went on for a year.

After a year, the situation seemed to be different. The boys started to remember our names! They'd also asked about us when we were absent for sessions and they began to share things with us! Finally, after a year of consistent appearance during sessions, initiated conversations, and most importantly, sincerity towards them, they've opened up to us! Though they always made fun of our names, like "pamela" becoming "pomelo" and many more nicknames, it doesn't imply anything negative. Instead, it tells me that they remember our names and they are very comfortable with us that they can talk to and joke with us like how friends would do. Furthermore, at the end of sessions, together with those who didnt go for sessions, they would always say goodbye to us, even to the extent of shouting goodbyes until we are out of sight. So, at 9pm on every Thursday, the whole block would be super noisy and filled with laughters for a few minutes. That unexplained feeling further motivates me to go for sessions.

Year 2 was a super hectic year for me due to my modules and Open House VC commitment. But, because of the friendship bonded, I would still attend those sessions. Before going for sessions, it was tiring due to lessons and whatsoever, but after stepping into the Home, it was a different feeling. Trouble and headaches seemed to be lifted off for that an hour plus or so as I enjoyed those sessions. Now, it's the third year already but the feeling is still the same.

Over the years, boys come and go. Some are more "friendly" while some are more "hostile". Volunteers do come and go too. This cycle is repeated many times. For those boys who had left, though we could no longer see them anymore, we are happy and glad that they've moved on. For volunteers who had left, we could just say nothing. So, for those who're still rather new to Youth, I hope that you'd be able to experience the whole process of meeting them, knowing them, understanding them, and slowly progressing to them asking about u, wanting to know more about u, and finally, being able to trust u and be friends with u. I feel that it's not easy for them to open up to strangers and wanting to be friends, so they might be more shy and less willing to interact with u initially. Hence, we should look upon them as our friends first if we'd want them to reciprocate. Remember, sincerity is the key and as told by our seniors, they really do sense our sincerity. =)

Actually, there're still alot more to say but i guess this post is getting rather long so i shall stop soon. Fellow volunteers! I hope that u would be able to experience what we've experienced! Hard work and perseverance do pay off! Enjoy the process and u'd discover that u really look forward to every Thursday to see their faces! AND! After the sessions, u might have some thoughts or some things to say.. Just blog it! Share the love! uhhhmm.. but remember about confidentiality and the indemnity, what can be said and what cannot be said! =)

Our first dish was YogurT from Frolick... and the thing was that most of us skipped breakfast and we only get to eat the yogurt at like ard 1145am! hungry like siao la.

after which grp 11 ate Tofu burgeR from cendele, seriously everyone, dun buy it. it's like eating a piece of bread so dry that u feel like u have not been drinking water for a week! then came the designated food Roti pratA @ little india.

ok i'm getting tired and lazy alr... so CUT SHORT this post! we then had Agar agaR at little indian as well, then came Regular fish & chipS @ botak jones bedok and follow by Spicy frieS! the last dish would be Salsa diP from east coast park. yucks. lol.

Overall, it's quite tiring but quite fun as u get to know more people from WSC!

Alright, let's hope weiyang will post up pictures taken during the food hunt! See you guys soon!!

Hi all,

Hope everyone has a good rest during the holidays! Hahaz, thru this blog, we are able to record down the various things that we have done, and pass it on to the our blk B juniors a few years down the road, who can read these entries and incorporate some of these games in the future sessions.

All right, to start off, I guess I can blog something abt the games that Eileen and Eunice had come up with a few weeks ago during session.

1) Modified version of tic-tac-toe.

We will need 9 chairs arranged in the tic-tac-toe formation, and everyone will be seated somewhere else.

So basically everyone is divided into 2 groups, and within each group, each person needs to think of a statement about himself/herself, and to indicate on the piece of paper whether it is true or false.

e.g. "I have been to Thailand" (T/F) or maybe something like "I can play the Piano" (T/F)... Kinda easy right? To prevent any possible cheating, the game master will have access to the answers to our own questions. And team A will tell team B a statement that they have previously thought of. If the team B answers (T/F) correctly, they can send someone out to be seated in the tic-tac-toe. If not, the game will continue with team B telling team A a statement and then to guess whether is T/F.... Of cuz, the winner team shall get a prize from the games master!! Lolx....

2) "Moving chair games"?????

I donno what's the name of this game. Owellz, doesn't matter, I shall describe it. Lol. Like the previous game, we are divided into 2 teams. So every team member needs to think of a cartoon character to represent themselves. e.g. Snow white, pikachu, doraemon, mickey mouse etc. But obviously you will want to think of something that is very difficult to recall.

Before the game starts, the team needs to remember the "character name" of everyone in the opposing team! U need this to win!!

There will be a row of 8 chairs, and we start off the game by having each member of the team moves "across" the chairs to reach the opposing side. And when I say "move", it means u need to be seated on the 1st chair, stand up, move to the 2nd chair, sit down, then stand up again, move to the 3rd chair, sit down.... blah blah...u get what I mean right?

So it will come to the point when the members of both team block each other's way, so we will have scissors-paper-stone between them. The winner will need to RECALL AND SHOUT the character name of the person that lost in this game. If he shouts correctly, the loser will need to go back so that the winner can proceed on to the opposite end. If he shouts wrongly or cannot remember, he himself will have to restart by going back to the starting point.

The team that gets all the members to the other end will win the game!

Sounds complicated? Okie lar, I think everyone will understand it better through live demonstration. So hopefully in the next session, we will get to play even more exciting games!! Yup, hope to see everyone soon. =)
